Mannitol Salt Agar/W Antibiotics
Description:
Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) is a selective and differential medium primarily used for the isolation of staphylococci, especially staphylococcus aureus, from clinical and environmental samples. High salt concentrations and mannitol fermentation distinguish pathogenic S. aureus from other salt-tolerant bacteria. MSA contains 7.5% sodium chloride, which inhibits most bacteria other than salt-tolerant staphylococci, and mannitol as the fermentable carbohydrate and phenol red as a pH indicator. Mannitol-fermenting organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus produce acids, that turns the medium and colonies yellow, while non-fermenters such coagulase-negative staphylococci grow as pink/red colonies with no yellowing of the medium.
