Description:
Mannitol Salt Agar with Gentamicin is a modified, highly selective medium designed for the isolation of Staphylococcus aureus (and other salt?tolerant staphylococci) while simultaneously suppressing a broader range of background flora, particularly Gram?negative bacteria and some competing Gram?positives. It combines the high?salt, mannitol?fermentation system of standard MSA with the additional selective pressure of the aminoglycoside gentamicin. Mannitol salt agar contains peptones and beef extract as a source of vitamins, nitrogen, minerals and amino acids. NaCl provides high osmotic pressure that most bacteria are unable to tolerate, allowing for salt tolerant bacteria to grow. D-Mannitol is a fermentable carbohydrate, and phenol red acts as pH indicator with yellow colonies forming in acid and red colonies forming at neutral to alkaline pH.
Gentamicin is added to further inhibit susceptible Gram-negative organisms and some Gram-positive background flora.
