Description:
Columbia agar base with gentamicin is a rich, general-purpose agar medium based on Columbia agar that has been supplemented with the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin to make it selective for certain Gram-positive and fastidious organisms while suppressing much of the background flora. Columbia agar base is a peptone-rich medium developed originally as a blood agar base for fastidious bacteria. The peptones and yeast extract provide amino acids, nitrogen, vitamins, and growth factors required for robust growth of fastidious and non-fastidious organisms. NaCl maintains osmotic balance.
Columbia agar if often enriched with 5-10% defibrinated sheep, horse, or rabbit blood and becoming "Columbia Blood Agar" that would allow the assessment of hemolysis and enhances growth and pigment production in many pathogens. The addition of gentamicin adds a further level of selectivity by inhibiting many gentamicin-susceptible Gram-negative bacilli and staphylococci, thereby favoring the recovery of organisms that are resistant or less affected at this concentration.
