Description:

Malt Extract Agar (MEA) plates with gentamicin are fungal isolation plates in which a standard MEA formulation is supplemented with aminoglycoside antibiotic (gentamicin) to supress bacteria, while allowing yeasts and molds to grow.  MEA contains malt extract as the primary carbon and energy source, supplying maltose, vitamins, dextrins, and growth factors that strongly support fungal metabolism and sporulation.  Mycological peptone/peptone provides nitrogenous compounds and amino acids, enabling luxuriant fungal growth and characteristic colony morphology.

Gentamicin is a aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds 30S ribosomal subunit in bacteria, causing mistranslation and inhibition of protein synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.  Gentamicin exhibits a broad activity against many gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria and retains activity over a relatively wide pH range, allowing it to be suitable for acidic media such as MEA.  When added to MEA, gentamicin suppresses bacterial contaminants that may otherwise overgrow or obscure fungal colonies, enhancing recovery and visibility of yeast and mold colonies from mixed samples such as environmental, food, cosmetics, and clinical material.  Common antibacterial working concentrations of gentamicin in culture media fall around 10–50 µg/mL.

The combination of Gentamicin and MEA further suppresses residual bacterial flora that may tolerate lower pH, producing a favorable selective environment for yeasts and molds from complex samples.
