Description:
Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA) is a general-purpose, nutrient-rich medium widely used for the isolation and cultivation of a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including both fastidious and non-fastidious species. The combination of tryptone and soy peptone supplies essential amino acids, peptides, vitamins, and minerals, supporting robust microbial growth. Glucose acts as a readily available carbohydrate source, while phosphate ensures pH stability and sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance.
The addition of gentamicin at 10 µg/mL transforms TSA into a selective medium, inhibiting the growth of gentamicin-sensitive bacteria and allowing for the isolation or enumeration of gentamicin-resistant strains. This makes these plates especially valuable in clinical, food, water, and environmental microbiology for detecting and studying antibiotic resistance, as well as for quality control in pharmaceutical and industrial settings.
TSA plates are also frequently used as a base for enriched or selective media and can be further supplemented with blood or other additives to support the growth of more fastidious organisms.
