Description
Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA) is a highly nutritious, general-purpose medium that supports the growth of a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including both fastidious and non-fastidious species. Its balanced formulation-featuring casein and soy peptones-provides essential amino acids, peptides, vitamins, and minerals, while glucose serves as a readily available carbohydrate source. Phosphate buffers the medium, and sodium chloride maintains osmotic equilibrium, ensuring optimal conditions for microbial cultivation.
The addition of Penicillin G at 60 µg/mL transforms TSA into a selective medium, effectively inhibiting the growth of penicillin-sensitive bacteria. This makes these plates especially valuable for isolating and propagating penicillin-resistant strains, screening for resistance, or suppressing background flora in mixed cultures. Such selectivity is particularly useful in clinical, food, water, and environmental microbiology, as well as in research applications involving antibiotic susceptibility testing.
TSA is frequently used as a base for enriched or selective media and can be further supplemented with blood or other additives to support the growth of more fastidious organisms. Its versatility and reliability make it a staple in microbiological laboratories for routine cultivation, enumeration, and maintenance of microbial cultures.
Applications
- Selective isolation and screening of penicillin-resistant bacteria
- Suppression of penicillin-sensitive background flora in mixed cultures
- Microbiological analysis of clinical, food, dairy, and water samples
- Teaching, demonstration, and research in microbiology
- Antibiotic susceptibility and resistance studies
Penicillin G (60 µg/mL) Tryptic Soy Agar Plates provide a robust and versatile platform for microbial cultivation and selective isolation, combining the broad utility of TSA with the targeted selectivity of penicillin. These plates are essential for laboratories working with antibiotic-resistant organisms or requiring reliable, general-purpose culture media with selective properties
