In a laboratory setting, water that has been softened to remove minerals and filtered to remove salts is typically referred to as demineralized and deionized water.
Deionized (DI) water has had almost all its mineral ions removed through an ion exchange process. This process typically involves:
(a) Softening the water to remove minerals like calcium and magnesium.
(b) The softened water is passed through ion exchange resins to remove remaining ions.
The resulting water is highly purified and free of most dissolved solids, including minerals and salts.
Some key characteristics of deionized/demineralized water include:
- Very low electrical conductivity due to the absence of ions
- Lack of minerals that are normally present in tap water
- High purity suitable for laboratory and industrial applications
It's important to note that while deionized water is very pure in mineral content, it may still contain organic compounds or microorganisms unless further purification steps are taken. For applications requiring the highest purity, distillation or additional filtration may be combined with deionization. Fresh demineralized and deionized water has a neutral pH of 7.0. Still, after a few hours of exposure to air (if left open and exposed to air), it can become slightly acidic with varying pH values, depending on the exposure time to the air.
The slight acidity is primarily due to the absorption of carbon dioxide from the air, which forms carbonic acid in the water. This effect is more pronounced in deionized water because it lacks the minerals and ions that normally buffer against pH changes.
It's important to note that the exact pH can vary based on factors such as exposure time to air, temperature, and the specific method of measurement used.
