Description:
Ampicillin is a penicillin derivative with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. Ampicillin differs from penicillin only by the presence of an amino group, which facilitates penetration through the outer membrane of some gram-negative bacteria. It acts against several gram-positive and -negative infections. Ampicillin binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall, causing interferences with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains that are essential for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This interference an interruption in the bacterial cell wall synthesis, causing cell lysis
* Ampicillin is used as a selective antibiotic generally at a concentration of 20–125 µg/mL, depending on experimental types.
