Description: 

Ampicillin is a penicillin derivative with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. Ampicillin differs from penicillin only by the presence of an amino group, which facilitates penetration through the outer membrane of some gram-negative bacteria.  It acts against several gram-positive and -negative infections.  Ampicillin binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall, causing interferences with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains that are essential for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This interference an interruption in the bacterial cell wall synthesis, causing cell lysis

*  Ampicillin is used as a selective antibiotic generally at a concentration of 20–125 µg/mL, depending on experimental types.  
*  Ampicillin degradation on agar plates can lead to the formation of satellite colonies. When frozen stock is thawed, DiagnoCine recommends to aliquote into 1mL working stock volume and not repeatedly freeze-and-thaw cycles. 
*  Ampicillin is commonly used as a selection marker for E. coli and other bacteria during plasmid DNA isolation, protein expression, and gene cloning
