Nutrient Agar Plates/W Streptomycin Sulfate
Catalog No: DCP-NAPSS
Streptomycin Sulfate (50 µg/mL) Nutrient Agar Plates are formulated for the selective cultivation and isolation of bacteria from a variety of clinical, food, dairy, and environmental samples. The inclusion of streptomycin sulfate at 50 µg/mL provides effective inhibition of streptomycin-sensitive bacteria, making these plates ideal for isolating and propagating streptomycin-resistant strains or for suppressing background flora in mixed cultures.
Nutrient Agar is a classic, non-selective culture medium. Its balanced formulation supports the growth of non-fastidious microorganisms and is widely used for routine laboratory work, teaching, and demonstration. The medium’s stability at ambient temperatures helps prevent overgrowth that can occur with richer substrates.
Streptomycin sulfate acts as an aminoglycoside antibiotic, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This mechanism ensures that only bacteria with resistance to streptomycin will grow, which is particularly useful in research, clinical diagnostics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and studies involving plasmid selection or genetic engineering.
The medium can be further enriched with biological fluids (such as horse or sheep blood) for cultivating fastidious organisms.
