Description:
Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) with gentamicin are a selective fungal medium designed to grow yeasts and molds while suppressing bacterial contaminants. PDA contains potato infusion/extract and dextrose solidified with agar allowing carbohydrate-rich, slightly acidic environment that supports luxuriant growth, sporulation and pigment production in a broad range of environmental, food, and cosmetic yeasts and molds.
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds bacterial ribosomes and inhibits protein synthesis suppressing many gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria. Introduction into PDA (typically around 50–100 µg/mL) reduces bacterial colony formation without significantly impairing growth of most yeasts and molds. The combination of PDA and gentamicin creates a selective environment where fungi can grow and spread while most co-inoculated bacteria are inhibited or greatly reduced.
