Description:


Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) plates with streptomycin sulfate are selective fungal media in which the standard SDA formulation is supplemented with streptomycin in its sulfate form to more effectively suppress bacterial contaminants while allowing yeasts and molds to grow. Streptomycin sulfate is simply the commonly used, water?soluble salt of streptomycin and functions identically with respect to antimicrobial activity.  Dextrose has a high level of carbon and energy source.  Peptone provides nitrogen, amino acids, vitamins and growth factors for fungal metabolism.

Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, disrupting protein synthesis and leading to cell death, particularly in many aerobic gram?negative rods and some gram?positive bacteria.?  The low pH and high glucose concentration, together with incubation at moderately low temperature (about 25–30 °C), favor fungal growth while discouraging bacterial growth.  Addition of streptomycin sulfate provides an extra barrier against bacterial contaminants beyond what pH alone can achieve, especially in specimens with heavy bacterial flora.
