Description:
Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) plates with gentamicin are selective fungal culture media in which SDA is supplemented with the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin to suppress bacterial contaminants, especially gram-negative rods, while allowing yeasts and molds to grow. Dextrose provides Fungi with energy and carbon source allowing for favorable growth. Peptones provides nitrogen, amino acids and minerals essential for fungal growth.
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside that targets bacterial 30S ribosomal subunits, inhibiting protein synthesis and killing susceptible bacteria. SDA with Gentamicin are used to suppress gram-negative rods that may overgrow and obscure fungal colonies.
