Description:
Luria–Bertani (LB) agar with streptomycin sulfate is a rich bacterial growth medium (standard LB agar) that has been made selective for streptomycin-resistant bacteria by adding the aminoglycoside antibiotic streptomycin. It is commonly used to grow and maintain strains carrying chromosomal or plasmid-encoded streptomycin-resistance markers, and to suppress streptomycin-susceptible bacteria in mixed samples.
Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, interferes with translation fidelity, and inhibits protein synthesis and can become bactericidal at effective concentrations to susceptible bacteria. Bacteria with streptomycin-resistance determinants can grow and form colonies on LB-streptomycin agar.
