Description:
Luria–Bertani (LB) agar with amphotericin B is a rich bacterial medium (standard LB agar) supplemented with an antifungal agent to selectively inhibit fungi while allowing bacteria to grow. It is typically used when you want to culture bacteria in environments where fungal contamination is a concern.
LB (agar) provides peptides, amino acids, vitamins and salts that support robust growth of non-fastidious bacteria (e.g., E. coli, many environmental and clinical isolates). Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal that binds sterols (especially ergosterol) in fungal cell membranes, forms pores, and disrupts membrane integrity, which is fungicidal or fungistatic depending on species and dose. Because bacteria generally lack sterol-rich membranes like fungi, amphotericin B has relatively low direct antibacterial activity at typical antifungal concentrations; thus bacteria grow on LB-amphotericin B, fungi (yeasts and molds) are inhibited or killed reducing or eliminating fungal contamination.
