What is AGM™?
AGM™ is a technology for embedding cells in an agarose gel shell1. AGM™ consists of a liquid alginate core inside and an agarose gel shell outside. The agarose gel shell is a porous material with a size of 30-200 nm, allowing for medium and gas exchange, including metabolic products from cells, making cell culture and genome amplification reactions possible inside. It also has an isolation function against foreign matter contamination from the outside of the membrane, and provides excellent cell protection against shear damage during medium exchange, which is a challenge in cell culture.
Advantages of AGM™ for Mammalian Cells
Compared to existing cell encapsulation technologies such as gel beads and water-in-oil droplets, AGM™ for mammalian cells offers advantages in terms of medium exchange, reagent addition, cell culture, and isolation of single capsules.
Features
- The capsule is made of a porous membrane, allowing for rapid medium and gas exchange.
- 3D cell culture of cells within the capsules is possible (formation of spheroids and organoids).
- The capsule has a high protective effect and protects against shear forces caused by medium replacement and medium agitation.
- Contains enough for 3 reactions (each reaction corresponds to 3 x 10 6 cells).
- High-throughput drug efficacy evaluation using cells
- Use as a capsule for storing and transporting cells.
- Protects cells from shear caused by stirring of the culture medium during transport or in a bioreactor.
- Co-culture studies of different types of cells
- Research using capsule cells such as spheroids and organoids
- Separation and collection of extracellular vesicles utilizing the porosity of the capsule
- Food Research:
- Research into capsules for administering enterobacteria
- In xenogeneic cell transplantation studies,
- agarose membranes also act as a defense mechanism against attack by immune cells.
